Black Hawk Down

14 May 2005

Hmmm, don't really know what to say about this movie. It's based on the horrific things that happened in Mogadishu, Somalia, in 1993, but how far it goes interpreting the truth I don't know. What is 4 sure it that the foreign troops stationed in this hornets nest that was Mogadishu at that time, sure didn't know what they were getting themselves into. Foreign intervention in countries torn apart by civil war doesn't work out well for the interveing party. Korea (1953), Vietnam (196x-1975), Afghanistan (1980's en 200x), Iraq...

The movie is no more than almost 2 hours of shooting, bullets, torn limbs and gaping wounds, madness, feelings of being in a maze one cannot get out of. Meeting an enemy that was seriously underrated, ending up being a formidable adversary.
Worst part of it all - the world was there to see, in the shape of hundreds of journalists and live broadcasts. It's a start - the movie - at trying to depict what really happened, why the foreign troops were there, what they faced, and how it all went miserably wrong. But also a short intro to the background of the conflict and the emotions of the troops involved - the idea behind them being there.

All in all quite a rough movie, in time quite short (24 hours), as a story a little thin, but otherwise, I must admit, quite impressive when it comes to tell the story of the hell that is called war...
